The term “yoga” (Sanskrit: योग, yoga) is derived from the root yuj (युज्), meaning “to attach, join, harness, or yoke.” Etymologically, it is linked to restraining or “yoking in” the senses and, more broadly, to “linking” or “yoking to” the divine. Related interpretations include “bond,” “restraint,” and “spiritual discipline,” and the idea of “yoking the mind” through control. Classical grammatical and traditional explanations also connect yoga with concentration. Pāṇini (4th century BCE) states that yoga can be derived from either yujir (“to yoke”) or yuj samādhau (“to concentrate”); traditional commentators on the Yoga Sutras favor the concentration root. In the Yoga Sutras context, yoga is treated as samādhi (concentration), and scholarly accounts emphasize that yoga has a wide range of meanings across Indian traditions, making it difficult to define with a single universal definition.
