Chromatography is a laboratory technique used to separate a mixture into its individual components. The sample is carried by a mobile phase (a gas or liquid) through a system such as a column, capillary, plate, or sheet, where a stationary phase is fixed. Different constituents interact differently with the stationary phase, so they are retained for different lengths of time and therefore move through the mobile phase at different apparent velocities, leading to separation based on differential partitioning between the two phases.
