Nuclear engineering is an applied engineering discipline focused on designing, developing, operating, and safely managing systems that use energy released by nuclear processes. It applies nuclear physics and related sciences to nuclear fission, in which atomic nuclei split, and nuclear fusion, in which nuclei combine. Its most prominent application is electricity generation, although nuclear energy also supports propulsion, space systems, medicine, industry, agriculture, scientific research, and security. Nuclear reactions release far more energy per unit of fuel than chemical reactions and can generate electricity without directly producing carbon dioxide during operation. The field originated with the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938 and expanded through the development of early research, military, and commercial reactors. Its scope includes reactor design and physics, thermal hydraulics, materials science, fuel-cycle management, waste disposal, radiation protection, nuclear medicine, instrumentation and control, quality assurance, reactor operations, nuclear security, and project management. Nuclear engineering is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaboration among engineers, physicists, scientists, medical professionals, and technical specialists.
