Uncontrolled cell growth and tumor invasion are defining features of cancer. Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells grow without proper regulation, forming malignant tumors that can invade nearby tissues and potentially spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). Malignant tumors differ from benign tumors because they have the ability to invade and disseminate. Tumor invasion is closely tied to metastasis, the process by which cancer spreads. Metastasis typically involves local invasion, entry of cancer cells into blood or lymph vessels (intravasation), circulation through the body, exit into new tissue (extravasation), and then proliferation with new blood supply (including angiogenesis). Because most cancer deaths are due to metastatic disease, invasion and spread are major drivers of cancer severity and outcomes.
